Rebecca Ortiz delivered perhaps the biggest hit of the season thus far for Middlesex College when she lined an RBI single to left in the bottom of the eighth to provide the Colts with an extra-inning 5-4 win against RCSJ-Gloucester, the #6 team in the country.
Ortiz went 2-4 in the game in support of Madison Rackett, who pitched all eight innings for the complete game win.
Middlesex now stands at 12-4 on the season while RCSJ-Gloucester fell to 9-6.
The Roadrunners took Game 1 of the doubleheader from the Colts, 10-5.
In Game 1, Middlesex took a 5-1 lead through two innings, but six Colts errors led to nine unanswered runs for RCSJ-Gloucester. Only three of the Roadrunners ten runs were earned in Game 1.
Kaylin Nepton (Sophomore/Middlesex, NJ) went 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Sarah Ohnmeiss (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ) drove home two runs for the Colts.
Game 2 was an exciting back-and-forth contest with the Colts eventually coming out on top.
Middlesex carried a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when RCSJ-Gloucester pulled ahead with two runs. The Colts answered back in the bottom of the sixth when they scored 3 runs to take a 4-2 lead into the seventh.
However, Middlesex couldn't keep the Roadrunners off the board as they scored two runs to send the game to extra innings. After a scoreless top of the eighth, Middlesex answered with Ortiz's one-out walkoff for the win.
In addition to Ortiz's two-hit day, Rackett also went 2-4 with an RBI.
Marissa Lugo (Sophomore/Iselin, NJ) went 1-2 with a triple, two runs, two RBIs and a walk for the Colts as well.
Madison Szatkowski (Sophomore/Sayreville, NJ) saw her 14-game hitting streak come to an end in Game 2. She had previously gotten a hit in every game she played this season. Her batting average now stands at .592 for the season.
The Colts have won 9 of their past 10 games and received votes in this week's NJCAA Division III National Top 10 poll.
Middlesex is scheduled to return to the diamond on Thursday when they take on Bucks CC. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM.
