GONZALEZ HURLS NO HITTER AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED NORTHAMPTON IN 7-2 WIN

GONZALEZ HURLS NO HITTER AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED NORTHAMPTON IN 7-2 WIN

A no-hitter is a rare feat in baseball and most schools can go years without experiencing being on the winning side of a no-hitter.

That's what makes what happened with Middlesex College Baseball this month even more special.

For the second time in less than three weeks, a Colts pitcher hurled a no-hitter as Roberto Gonzalez turned the trick against Northamptom, the nation's #4 ranked team, in a game two Colts victory in a home doubleheader.

Ryan Tomasula (Sophomore/Edison, NJ) pitched a no-hitter 17 days earlier in a Colts 12-0 win over Illinois Valley CC.

Middlesex dropped the first game, 3-1, but recovered on the strength of Gonzalez's gem to take game two, 7-2.

Middlesex is now 13-10 on the season while Northampton fell to 19-3 on the season.

In game one, Middlesex and Northampton battled closely and the Spartans carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Colts were able to load the bases with no outs, putting the tying and winning runs on base, but could not cash in and fell to the Spartans by that score.

In game two, Middlesex took a 1-0 lead in the third and extended that to 3-0 with two in the fourth. The Colts carried a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth when they were able to add three insurance runs to give Gonzalez some breathing room.

At that point, the only drama was whether Gonzalez could complete the no-hitter, which he did without incident.

Gonzalez ended the game with 10 strikeouts in the win.

The Middlesex offense was led by Angel Deaza (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) who had two hits, two RBIs and a walk. Conor Drury (Freshman/North Brunswick, NJ) added a double and a run while Matthew Troche (Sophomore/Fords, NJ) and Michael Wansaw (Sophomore/Elizabeth, NJ) both had a hit, RBI and walk.

Middlesex is scheduled to return to action this weekend in a pivotal series against OCC. Game one is scheduled to be played at Ocean on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00PM. Middlesex is scheduled to host Ocean on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30pm.
