CJ Mooney was selected to be the Head Baseball Coach at Middlesex College prior to the start of the 2014 Baseball Season. The 2024 Colts finished with 35 wins, marking the third consecutive season with 35 or more wins. Twice knocking off a #1 team in the National Poll, the Colts defeated RCSJ-Gloucester and Northampton by scores of 6-2 and 7-2, respectively. An opening series sweep of RCSJ-Cumberland in the NJCAA Region XIX Tournament advanced the Colts to their second consecutive final four appearance. The 2023 season helped put the program on the national scene. Featuring a 15-game winning streak, the Colts advanced into the Region XIX Final Four finishing the season with 36 wins and #9 ranking in the final NJCAA National Poll. In 2022, the Colts won 37 games, six more than the previous record of 31 which had stood for over 20 years. The Colts earned a trip to the Region XIX Tournament in 2022 and Coach Mooney was voted by his colleagues as the recipient of the inaugural Middlesex College Coach of the Year.
Previously, Coach Mooney was honored as the 2016 Region XIX Coach of the Year, as his team finished the regular season with a (28-14, 16-8) record and advanced into the quarterfinals of the Region XIX Tournament. The 2016 Colts finished with the second most wins in program history (29). The 2017 Colts finished the year with (25) wins, marking the first time since 2003-2004 with consecutive 20+ game winning seasons. During the 2018 season, Mooney earned his 100th career win on April 29th, in a 12-0 victory at Bucks County College. The 2019 MCC Blue Colts finished the season with (26) wins and a trip to the Region XIX Quarterfinals. This was the 3rd time in the last 4 seasons that the program had won at least 25 or more games in a single season. Coach Mooney currently sits 2nd all-time on the career wins list at Middlesex College with a total of 246.
Not only have the Colts found success on the ball field during Mooney's tenure, they have also been incredibly successful in the classroom. Since the spring of 2014, there have been 24 Academic All-Americans, 74 All-Academic Region XIX and 109 All-Academic GSAC student athletes. This academic success has led to the baseball team capturing the overall Men's Team GPA Award in 2015 (3.09), 2016 (3.44), 2017 (3.28), 2019 (3.22) and 2022.
As a player, Mooney was a two year starter and letter-winner at Middlesex County College in 2009-2010. In 2010, he was named a First Team NJCAA Academic All-American. After his playing days at MCC were over, Coach Mooney transferred to Rutgers Camden. In his first season with the Scarlet Raptors, he became an All-American when he was named to the 2011 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Gold Glove Team. Coach Mooney earned the honor as the best defensive first baseman in the country. In 2012, CJ was named to the Capital One Academic All American Division III Baseball Third Team with a 4.0 GPA. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rutgers-Camden with his Bachelor’s Degree. He also earned his Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine graduating with a 3.96 GPA. Aside from coaching, CJ works full-time as the Manager of Student Success Services at Middlesex College. He also serves as Adjunct Faculty within the History and Social Sciences Department. CJ was recognized as the 2023 recipient for the Outstanding Service Administrator Award.
