Smith brings close to 20 years of experience as an Assistant Coach for multiple successful NCAA Division I teams. During his five seasons on the bench at Wagner, the Seahawks posted a NEC record of 111-67 and were the two-time NEC regular season champions.
Prior to Wagner, Smith was an Assistant Coach at Fairleigh Dickinson and Drexel, where he assisted James "Bruiser" Flint, who was Smith's Head Coach as a player at UMass.
A standout player at St. Patrick's of Elizabeth, Smith earned All-State recognition as a key member of Kevin Boyle's Celtics team that gained national notoriety in the 1990s. A high school teammate of current Seton Hall Men's Basketball Shaheen Holloway and former NBA star Al Harrington, Smith was rated as a Top 50 national recruit by multiple publications in 1995 and '96 when he committed to play for John Calipari at UMass during their Final Four season in 1996.
Calipari left UMass after that season to accept the Head Coaching position of the New Jersey Nets, but Smith stayed committed to UMass and played four seasons under James "Bruiser" Flint. At UMass, Smith played in two NCAA Tournaments and one NIT. He was the Team Captain in 2001 and was named the team's top defender and won the Mr. Hustle Award in 1997 and 2001.
