Offense was the name of the game as Middlesex College and RCSJ-Cumberland softball combined for 40 runs on 49 hits in a weekend doubleheader. Middlesex won Game 1 9-8, and Cumberland came back to win game two 16-7 in five innings.
The Colts spotted Cumberland a 6-0 lead in Game 1, before storming back to win 9-8. The tying and go-ahead runs were stranded in the top of the 7th inning, as third baseman Summer Ramirez (Freshman/South Brunswick, NJ) snagged a line drive to end the game. Marissa Lugo(Freshman/Iselin, NJ) went the distance for the win, surrendering eight runs on 11 hits over seven innings. Kaylin Nepton (Freshman/Middlesex, NJ), Rebecca Ortiz (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ), Jennah Schiraldo (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ), and Madison Szatkowski (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) all collected 2 hits for the Colts. Szatkowski doubled and added 2 RBI's, and Nepton tripled and had 2 RBI's. Lugo tripled and had 3 RBI's.
In Game 2, Middlesex jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but a 16-hit attack by Cumberland was too much to overcome. Lugo took the loss in the circle. Nepton, Szatkowski, and Tavarez all had multiple hits for the Colts. Szatkowski and Ramirez doubled, and Nepton and Lugo added 2 RBIs each.
The Colts are now 4-4 on the season, and 4-2 in Region 19 play. They are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Division 2 Raritan Valley CC. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM.
