Madison Rackett picked up wins in both games and the Colts received contributions on offense up and down the lineup as Middlesex swept a Region 19 doubleheader at RCSJ-Cumberland.
The sweep gave Middlesex wins in 13 of their past 14 games and improved their record to 16-4 on the season. RCSJ-Cumberland fell to 6-14 with the losses.
In Game 1, Middlesex scored six runs in the top of the first and then three more in the top of the fifth to support Rackett, who was nearly flawless in the circle. The freshman from Woodbridge allowed just one hit and one walk in picking up the shutout win.
Kaylin Nepton (Sophomore/Middlesex, NJ) went 2-3 with a double, a run and an RBI and Marissa Lugo (Sophomore/Iselin, NJ) went 2-3 with two RBIs.
Rebecca Ortiz (Sophomore/South Plainfield, NJ) was active in the middle of both rallies as well. The right fielder went 1-2 with a double, two runs, three RBIs and a walk.
In Game 2, Middlesex again had the bats working early. The Colts jumped out to an 8-2 lead through the first three innings and then held on from there for an 8-3 win.
Ortiz, Lugo, Madison Szatkowski (Sophomore/Sayreville, NJ) and Makenzie Marsh (Freshman/Woodbridge, NJ) each had two hits in the game and Ortiz drove home three runs. Szatkowski also drove home two Colts and scored two runs herself.
RCSJ-Cumberland had some success against Rackett, but the freshman righty worked out of multiple jams and was helped by a Colts defense that didn't commit an error. Rackett allowed three runs over seven innings of work and improved her record to 8-2 on the season.
Middlesex is in a tight race for the top seed in the Region 19 playoffs. The Colts currently hold the top spot with a 9-1 Region 19 record. They have three Region 19 doubleheaders left, including showdowns with Northampton and Brookdale, who currently sit in second and fourth place in the standings.
The Colts return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Ocean CC for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM.
