Middlesex College Women's Basketball to thrive on the NJCAA Division II level, winning both games on a trip to Maryland to move to 3-0 on the season.
The Colts came from behind to top the College of Southern Maryland 59-54 and followed that up by beating Anne Arundel Community College 72-65.
Against Southern Maryland (0-2), Middlesex relied on a strong defense and opportunistic scoring to topple the Hawks. Middlesex was behind 23-24 after a low-scoring first half, but got enough offense in the second half to come away with the five-point win.
Three women scored in double digits for the Colts with Courtney Hansen (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) leading the way with 18. Angelina Peralta-Almonte (Freshman/Plainfield, NJ) added 16 and Vanessa Rivas (Sophomore/Perth Amboy, NJ) scored 14 as well.
Rivas turned in another intimidating performance on defense, registering seven blocks in the game. It was the fourth time in her career that she has blocked as many as seven shots in a game. She also added eight rebounds. Peralta-Almonte led the Colts with 10 rebounds, which gave her her first career double-double.
In the second game of the trip, Middlesex used a fantastic performance by Hansen and timely defense in the game's waning minutes to nail down the seven-point win.
The Colts led much of the way, but Anne Arundel was able to close the game to just two points on a made layup to make the score 65-63 with three minutes left. Damani Anderson (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) hit two free throws to give Middlesex a little breathing room. After Anderson's free throws, Middlesex forced three turnovers and made two additional layups in the final 2:20 to seal the win.
Hansen was phenomenal, scoring a career high 26 points in the win. Rivas notched a double-double, scoring 10 points with 15 rebounds. Anderson added 12 points as well.
Middlesex returns to action Thursday when they travel to Union College for a big early season matchup with the Owls. Tipoff is set for a 5:00PM.
